Peja, September 10, 2025 – The city of Peja has once again become the cultural center of the region as it welcomes writers, poets, critics, and literature enthusiasts to the 21st “Azem Shkreli” International Literature Festival. The festival, which runs from September 10 to 11, opened its doors this evening at 6:00 PM in the “Sheshi Italia” Palace of Culture, marking the beginning of two days filled with art, dialogue, and celebration of the written word.
The festival’s program reflects a deep commitment to literature and cultural exchange. Throughout the two days, participants will have the opportunity to attend literary readings, where established and emerging authors will present their latest works; discussion panels, focusing on pressing issues in contemporary literature and society; mural presentations, which link visual art with poetry and prose; as well as award ceremonies to honor distinguished contributions to literature. A musical concert is also part of the agenda, giving the event a celebratory and interdisciplinary character.
What makes this year’s edition particularly noteworthy is the new spirit it brings to the tradition. According to organizers, the 21st festival introduces a fresh standard in both organization and vision, striving to connect more deeply with audiences and to expand the cultural impact of literature. “We see this festival not only as a tribute to Azem Shkreli but also as a platform that keeps alive the dialogue between generations, cultures, and artistic disciplines,” said one of the coordinators during the opening ceremony.
At the heart of the festival is the memory of Azem Shkreli (1938–1997), a poet, writer, and cultural figure whose legacy continues to resonate in Albanian literature. His work, marked by a profound connection to identity, homeland, and human emotion, serves as both inspiration and foundation for the festival. Each edition seeks to honor his contribution while opening doors for new voices to emerge and be heard.
The festival has long been recognized as an important cultural landmark, not only for Peja but for the entire region. Over the years, it has attracted participants from Kosovo, Albania, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and beyond, fostering a network of exchange and cooperation among artists and literary circles. By doing so, it strengthens Peja’s reputation as a city of culture and creativity.
Visitors to this year’s edition can expect lively discussions, moving performances, and a chance to experience how literature interacts with other forms of art. The streets and cultural spaces of Peja are set to host a vibrant atmosphere where words, music, and colors blend into a shared celebration.
As the festival unfolds over the next two days, it promises not only to celebrate the beauty of the written word but also to reaffirm the role of literature in connecting people and shaping collective memory. With its expanding reach and innovative program, the “Azem Shkreli” International Literature Festival continues to grow as one of the most significant cultural events in the region, carrying forward the legacy of a writer whose voice still echoes strongly in contemporary times.
