Kosovo Reaches Historic Heights in FIFA Rankings as Albania Also Climbs

The footballing landscape in the Balkans has received a major boost this month, as both Kosovo and Albania achieved upward movement in the latest FIFA men’s world rankings. For Kosovo, the progress is particularly historic, with the Dardanians securing their best-ever position since becoming a member of UEFA and FIFA.

Kosovo’s Record-Breaking Rise

Led by coach Franco Foda, the Kosovo national team has climbed to 91st place in the rankings, advancing four places from last month’s 95th. This marks the highest position the team has held since gaining FIFA recognition in 2016.

Kosovo now holds 1262.1 points, placing them ahead of Syria and just behind El Salvador. The result is a significant statement of progress for a national side that continues to build its footballing identity on the international stage.

The rise comes off the back of a 2–0 victory over Sweden, one of the most impressive results in the country’s short footballing history. Goals from Vedat Muriqi and his teammates showcased both resilience and quality against a respected European opponent. Despite a heavy defeat to Switzerland shortly after, the ranking points from the Sweden victory were enough to push Kosovo to their historic new standing.

Coach Foda praised the squad’s dedication: “Every match is a learning step for us, and this ranking shows that our work is being noticed. We want to continue growing and challenging stronger opponents.”

Albania Continues Steady Progress

Neighboring Albania also enjoyed an encouraging climb in the latest FIFA table. Under the guidance of coach Sylvinho, the Red and Blacks moved up two places, now sitting 66th in the world.

With 1380.66 points, Albania is currently ranked ahead of the United Arab Emirates and just behind Honduras. The progress was fueled by back-to-back wins this month: a 1–0 friendly victory against Gibraltar, followed by a crucial 1–0 triumph over Latvia in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

The results reflect Albania’s growing consistency on the international stage. After qualifying for Euro 2024, the team has maintained momentum and looks determined to remain competitive against Europe’s mid-tier and higher-ranked nations.

Regional Football on the Rise

The simultaneous success of Kosovo and Albania highlights a positive trend for Balkan football. For Kosovo, their ranking milestone represents not just statistical progress, but also a symbolic step forward in their journey as an international footballing nation. For Albania, the steady improvement reinforces their status as a team capable of challenging for major tournament spots.

Football observers in the region note that both teams benefit from a new generation of players competing in strong European leagues, coupled with tactical improvements brought by experienced coaching staff.

Looking Ahead

Kosovo will aim to build on this momentum in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers, with confidence at an all-time high following their historic rise. Albania, meanwhile, will look to consolidate their place in the mid-60s and push closer to the top 50, a ranking that would underline their ambitions for consistent tournament participation.

As both nations celebrate their September achievements, fans across the region will be hoping that this upward trajectory continues — turning rankings progress into competitive success on the pitch.
